The customer is one of the top banks in the Philippines and has been well-known to be among the first to embrace technological innovations to empower its customers. The bank’s digital transformation strategy focuses on delivering superior customer experience, in order to stay ahead of the game in terms of efficiency and innovation.

One of their top digital transformation goals was to embark on the adoption of open source by migrating their proprietary database software to an open source database platform to power their business critical applications.

Customer Background

The bank has been a regular consumer of proprietary software (such as Oracle) with about 90% of applications running on them. The customer wanted to bring a shift to their technology portfolio and thus embrace open source as a strategic choice for their application’s database layer.

The open source alternative had to match best in class performance, scalability and be cost efficient all the same.

Key Challenges

The key goal was to migrate from their legacy software to PostgreSQL and reap the benefits of it – namely cost, flexibility, and customizability. The customer wanted to boot the massive bills for proprietary licensing and start looking for viable alternatives that ensured that they go faster live, with a go-to-market strategy.

Their intent was to move to PostgreSQL, while also getting their teams to get upskilled and trained in using it subsequently. The key areas that the bank looked at tackling were:

  • High database licensing cost: The costs of legacy database licenses were expensive with a year on year increase as was expected

  • Vendor lock-in: The customer wanted to move away from being stuck towards a single vendor working model
  • Database migration: Existing and new applications will eventually run on an open-source database platform
  • Get future-ready: Helped in kick starting the adoption of the open source journey as a part of their digital transformation strategy

The Solution: Ashnik’s Approach

Using Ashnik’s engagement model, the customer was guided through the PostgreSQL adoption process. The engagement exercise began with awareness, in which Ashnik’s consulting team updated the customer with the relevant technology and business benefits, which includes EDB’s Postgres features and tools. Ashnik has assisted with a (POV) Proof of Value which showcases not only the technical migration capabilities, but also how it will offer value to the customer in terms of freeing up dollars for their IT modernization and other digital initiatives through the rest of their application landscape. Additionally, moving from legacy to PostgreSQL opens the possibility of separating online transaction processing (OLTP) and analytics into different warehouses. It is also possible to improve both responsiveness and analytics capabilities which in turn can help to improve the bank’s customer experience.

The database solutions experts from Ashnik have assisted the bank in executing a pilot project to get a real life experience of the migration quality and integration into their existing setup. A thorough analysis should be conducted to evaluate the compatibility of client, application server, data access, and database features. A comprehensive migration assessment was devised, which gave the customer the confidence that PostgreSQL will be an effective alternative to Oracle (in this case).

Business Benefits

Ashnik’s migration, consulting services, support and training for teams has ensured a successful move of its workloads to PostgreSQL, with expected results that are achieved in-line with the set criteria. The designed architecture was endorsed by both the application and database teams. Here are the top benefits to the customer in successfully migrating to PostgreSQL:

  • Avoided vendor lock-in: Determining the best alternative technology in deployment has helped to avoid steep vendor lock-in
  • Cost savings: 40% – 60% cost savings has helped in compromising the application’s performance, along with improved processes and enhanced customer experience
  • Utilized Savings: Savings from migration to an open source platform has allowed the customer to further invest in digitalization across their IT panorama

The Conclusion

Ashnik has helped the bank to slash IT costs, adopt open source, improve processes for enhanced customer experience, and most importantly, can help imbibe an open source culture for their teams.

As part of the digital transformation journey, the bank will improve the Business Continuity Plan (BCP) by adding more subscriptions to their ‘Disaster and Recovery’ strategy. Ashnik’s end-to-end migration solution helped the bank to make the journey swift, systematic and effective with minimum downtime.

The bank is pleased with the Database upgrade using open source – enabling it to pave its way as a digital-first organization and deliver innovations to its customers, at a faster pace.
